In the United States, according to research, 99 percent of all homes keep a television set turned on for about seven hours a day, and children spend more time watching television than on any other activity except sleep.  Among teachers, parents, and psychologists, there has been growing concern about what influence TV has on children.  Indeed, some children's doctors go so far as to say that children under the age of two should not watch television at all.

One of the things people are most concerned about is the relationship of TV violence to aggressive behavior in children.  If children watch television for two hours a day, they could be exposed to as many as 8,000 murders and 100,000 other acts of violence by the time they leave elementary school.

The point is whether children become more aggressive by watching violence on TV.  In fact, one survey reveals that most young people themselves thought that TV violence was one of the factors that brought about aggressive acts among their peers.

Specialists, however, are still uncertain about the effects of TV violence, as there is no clear causal link.  Although research evidence shows children who frequently watch TV violence are more aggressive than other children, it might simply mean that children who have a tendency to be violent are attracted to violent shows.  Some researchers suggest that we also need to consider how violence is portrayed.  In many cartoons and crime dramas, violence on the part of heroes, or “good guys” tends to be justified as a way of punishing “bad guys”.  It has also been suggested that children do not respond to TV passively.  They do not just copy the behaviors but interpret what they see.  If this is the case, then it might not be the violence itself on TV that has effects on behavior, but rather the way it is presented and the underlying values in our society.
